But in my world, there used to exist a parallel world called the Metaverse that was formed from human cognition. My team and I could travel back and forth between the real world and the cognitive world at will.

... A little like the UG and RG, then?

Kind of, but not quite. You don't have to be dead to access the Metaverse.

So, how could you access it, then?

Through an app on my phone. So long as we had the right coordinates, we could access the Metaverse at any time.

Do you remember what Max said about Noise? How they feed off of negative emotions?

In the Metaverse, there's something similar. They're called Shadows, and they take on the appearance of characters from well-known myths and history. They represented humanity's negative thoughts, feelings and emotions. Their distorted desires and everything that goes into them.

It's pretty dangerous to wander around the Metaverse unarmed because of their existence.

... I assume, then, that you weren't unarmed?

[purrtagonist]

No. Of course not.

[he taps his temple]

The power of Persona. That's what kept us alive in that world.

[subordinacy]

[purrtagonist]

Everyone has a mask that helps them face the hardships of society. It's really a metaphorical thing, but in the Metaverse, those masks are more tangible. We can use them to summon a being to fight by our sides. They're what we call "Personas."

The physical shape they take depends on the person, and they're supposed to be reflections of who we are in here-- [thunks his fist against his chest, over his heart]

Everyone on my team had Personas modeled after famous thieves or rogues. Yusuke's was Goemon, for instance. And Makoto's was Johanna.

[subordinacy]

[None of those ring a bell.]

So what exactly do you steal, then? I assume "hearts" wasn't meant to be literal.

[purrtagonist]

It wasn't.

We'd steal the distorted desires of the wicked and corrupt, and make them have a change of heart. Normally afterwards, they'd confess their crimes to the public and turn themselves into the police.
