He was selected to act as Reaper. If he hadn't gone, another Reaper would've. They're pretty much weekly.

And how does one become a Reaper to begin with?

You win the Game and you ask.

... Why would you want to be a Reaper?

Couple of reasons. For one, reincarnation is limited, but Reaper ranks aren't. Reapers are also essentially immortal unless Erased. You get powers. They can go between the RG and UG at will. All Games are different, so what they have to do varies depending on their Bosses.

The whole Player infiltration shtick isn't a normal scenario. I haven't been shy about calling this Game a fucking shitshow, Sekreuz.

Yep. If you win the Game, you can pick Reaper as an option. A Reaper's job is to do what the Composer says, basically, so it depends on the Game and what's needed. Erasure isn't always it.

Yeah, newsflash, Reapers are people too. Can't really brush them all under one easy to guess stroke. Anyway, the Composer decides the rules of the Game. They have final say in anything that goes on in the UG.

So, to name an extreme example, they could show up tomorrow and decide to erase us all.
